Higaonna
The great master Higaonna Kanryo (in another version - Higashionna) was born March 10, 1853 in Naha, the capital of Okinawa. His father, Canio was a small trader, deliver goods of daily demand for boats between the small islands of Okinawa. From a young age Higaonna helped his father in his work and through hard physical labor, has developed a strong body. Higaonna was still a teenager when his father died suddenly. For the first time to the pursuits of martial arts Kanryo began in 1867 under the leadership of master Aragaki Sayce. just over three years Higaonna studied with him until the end of 60-ies of the XIX century, his mentor, along with officials not sent to work in China. And he decided to go Kanryo the "Mecca of martial arts." The ship arrived to the shores of China's eight days to go ... He arrived in Fuzhou. He was then 16 years. Here he studied Chinese martial arts under the guidance of the great master Ryu Ryu Ko. Besides kata Kanryo Higaonna studied his technique Shuai-jiao, ie exercises with the traditional means for the development of physical and vntrenney forces (such as tyasi, makiwara, etc.) and exact same techniques Kohi (What). Ryuryu Co. often gave students the task to climb into a large bamboo basket, where students tried to apply the techniques on each other, narabatyvaya skills on the battlefield in a confined space. The master Ryuryu Co. earned a living by weaving bamboo baskets. Once a young Kanryo witnessed the power and strength of his mentor. To him said the Moldovan people and, intending to boast of his strength, he took a thick bamboo pole and broke it in half. In response to this Ryuryu Co. took the same bamboo stick and stretching in different directions on the ends, tore it in half (!). Soon Kanryo became "uchi deshi" (best student) and remained in China under the strict supervision of a teacher about 13 years. In addition to studying empty hand martial arts, it also improved the handling of weapons and learned to treat the Chinese herbs. Master Ryu Ryu Ko highly of his pupil and adopted Kanryo skill in these arts - an honor that is rarely sought. Ability Kanryo in the martial arts has reached such heights that it became famous throughout Fuzhou and the surrounding area. Chojun Miyagi (founder of Goju-Ryu and successor Kanryo Higaonna) said of him: "My sensei possessed incredible strength: The intensity of exercise, which took place in China, beyond all understanding ... The speed and power Kanryo really inhuman: his hands and feet moved faster than lightning" . Words can not express his real ability. We can only say that his skill was incredible, but even that does not pay tribute. In 1881, after 13 years of diligent study with his teacher, he returned to Okinawa in Naha where his martial arts became known as Naha-te (these skills were also called Tode, meaning martial arts from China). Higaonna taught these arts people of Okinawa and at the same time continued its own research and practice. To educate young people on Okinawa he developed a method specifically designed for the development of mind and body, to improve the physical and spiritual well-being. The first time that before the secret art of Naha-te was "is open" society in general, occurred in October 1905, when Higaonna began teaching Kanryo in Naha Commercial High School. He taught Sanchin kata-type "kitteyteki", ie kata, which must absorb at least a few years in a row, all the rest lined up behind the kata Sanchin-no-kata. During the course Kanryo Higaonna as the master put an extremely difficult task. However, in everyday life, he was such a humble man who became famous for his virtuous character. He was a man who needed no ordinary things. He led a simple life, entirely devoted to the study and practice martial arts. There are many stories in which retold stories about life and training Kanryo Higaonna. The power of his legs was legendary so that it is often referred to as "Ashi but Higaonna" (legs Higaonna) in Okinawa. His virtuous character was widely known and respected, and because of his popularity the people of Naga gave him the name "Obushi Higaonna Tanmaya," the name reflects the love and respect that people have for this great man and great martial arts. It is often said that "the purpose of karate is not to hurt people and maim them, and help society." To better characterize the personality of Higaonna, you can bring one more expression that belongs to him: "In the martial artist occupies an important place spiritual perfection, so remember: if your life has something to block your way, turn and go around it ..." In addition to unparalleled martial arts Kanryo Higaonna did another great job: he had brought from China, Chinese martial arts in Okinawa and distributed them among the people in Okinawa. Higaonna now bears the title "Kensei (sacred fists) Higaonna Kanryo", the title is absolutely true. Okinawan martial arts is destined to live forever as the great values of a culture of Okinawa.
